Chầu
drum is played with a wooden stick. In classical opera Tuồng, it is
used to fill in along the song. Especially it is used to show the
appreciation through some regulated sounds. Those sounds include:
One beat is to fill in. Two beats mean showing
good appreciation to instrumentalists. Three beats symbolize a
bravo express very good Cơmment to the players.
One sound of Tịch
(instrumentalist lay one stick on the surface of the drum and beat on
the surface with another stick) means bad Cơmments.
One sound of Cắc (beat
on the frame) is to give Cơmment to the artist.
In Chèo opera, there are also some particular rules that require the musician who play Chầu drum in Tuồng or Chèo must have a good knowledge in each of art form.
Tùng: beat made on the middle of the drum surface with loud, low and far-vibrated sound. Example (375-5) Cắc: beat made on the edge of the drum surface with strong sound. Example (376-6). Tùng-Cắc: Playing in roll, of which, the first part is usually played with loud and slow sounds, then the rest with low and quick tempered-beating sounds. Example (377-5+6); Example:(372-5) Xòe drum. Example: (373-6) Lion drum. Example: (380-4 ) Ngũ Liên drum. Example: (381-Page Pd1 ) Chầu drum and Lục lạc (tintinnabula). Tùng: đánh vào giữa mặt trống, âm thanh kêu to, trầm và ngân dài.
